The list of things in the wellness wheel can easily be found in google search. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Wellness as “...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Whereas The National Wellness Institute defines it as "a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential."

It simply taking full care of ourselves, being happy with our physical, mental, and social wellbeing. If a person is "well" then they can really see and feel the beauty and excitement in the world around them.

According to experts, Wellness means taking steps to prevent illness and to lead a richer, more balanced, and more satisfying life.  Aside being able to carry out daily activities, including work, family responsibilities, and social obligations, most, if not all of us, want to live long and productive lives.

Being in a state of wellness...why should I care?

It is an indisputable fact that healthier, happier people live longer. Wellness does matter! To reduce stress, risk of illness, ensure positive interaction and to live a higher quality of life, one has to maintain a level of optimal wellness.

Good health and Wellness…what’s the difference?

We are often caught interchanging the meaning for these two words. Good health is a goal one can achieve. For example Kwame has been battling with obesity and high blood pressure, he wants to lose weight and lower his blood pressure, he is considered healthy once he is able meet this goal.

Wellness is a lifestyle and is not an end to be achieved. For example Abena is healthy, free of risk factors for disease and does not practice adverse health behaviours that could jeopardize her health in the future. Abena is promoting Wellness. She has to strive for balance throughout her whole life, thus it is a dynamic concept that continues for a lifetime.

How to achieve and maintain wellness

Your body is an amazing thing and will work well for you depending on how you treat it; your body requires effort and focus on your part to maintain optimum health so that you can perform at your absolute best as much as possible. To start your own “good health” practices, there are three things you can do immediately without any medical knowledge:

  • Eating Healthy
  • Commit to Exercising
  • Do Your Check Ups (very important)

What you eat is closely linked to your health, filling yourself with a variety of nutrients and vitamins will not only help prevent and treat some illness like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes but will also keep your body functioning at its best.

Eat: Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, herbs, spices, fish, seafood and extra virgin olive oil.

Eat in moderation: Poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt.

Eat only rarely: Red meat, Bread

Don't eat: Sugar-sweetened beverages, added sugars, processed meat, refined grains, refined oils and other highly processed foods.

You are what you eat, so choose the wise way to work at your best focusing on wholesome and varied foods that nourish you and meet your nutritional and calorie requirements.
